June 19, 2014: Being Aware of Where You Stand

There is s sense of security in being aware of your position, whether it is in a relationship, at your workplace or generally in life. Inherently, every human being seeks this security and it is safe to say that this security is a pre-requisite for happiness in life. However, in order to achieve this kind of security, it is normal to have satisfied a number of requirements. CFPA provides this sense of security through the association’s certification process utilizing a number of sustainability parameters that have to be met in order to gain this security.
In this way, and through its certification process, the CFPA has renewed the way many companies and indeed a lot of the association’s partner’s view as sustainability. In the past, whenever companies were asked to ensure that their practices were environmentally safe and sustainable, they would think that the company would have to incur a lot of expenses in terms of time and money to make this achievable. This notion is misleading as evidenced by CFPA’s certification process which focuses on sustainability parameters in a way that many companies find savings that pay for the process. CFPA’s certification process has gradually changed this notion and even become a bigger part of these companies’ operations. CFPA’s certification process may not be perfect in the 20 years that the association has been in operation but the process has definitely come a long way offering more than just a stamp of approval.
It is definitely a different playing field from the one 20 years ago but the changes have been generally positive. For instance, a significantly larger portion of the population are aware of the effects of climate change in their world. Maybe it is because, we can no longer ignore the fact that our activities are affecting our world and that we absolutely have to do something about it. This realization has made it extremely important that companies satisfy the PCF requirements, not just as a part of their contribution to healing our world but more importantly because more and more people and companies are seeking to do business with a company that cares enough to make the effort and provide independent third party accountability via a sustainability index.
Companies that make the effort to go through the certification process that CFPA so elaborately offers, should be lauded for they prove that aside from just caring about what today’s market offers and the profits they are likely to make, they also care about future generations and how their activities today affect our planet in the future. They do so by ensuring that natural resources are equitably utilized for the betterment of today’s people and planet even as they maximize their profits while also ensuring that the same resources will be available to future generations.
A clear line has been drawn, without fence sitters; you either are for sustainability or you choose to close your mind to our changing environment. Just remember that there is a sense of security in knowing where you stand and further happiness if you stand for truth and in this case sustainability. You cannot afford to choose to ignore the situation, your profits, company image and eventually reputation will suffer the consequences in the long run.

March 17, 2014: GEORGIA-PACIFIC PROFESSIONAL RECOMMITS TO PROCESS CHLORINE FREE CERTIFIED PRODUCTS

ATLANTA – Georgia-Pacific Professional today announced that the Chlorine Free Products Association (CFPA) has re-certified a selection of the company’s tissue, towel, napkin and wiper products. This certification designates that Georgia-Pacific Professional facilities making these products follow the guidelines of the Processed Chlorine Free Certification Standard, part of CFPA’s Sustainable Manufacturing Initiative.
This certification by the CFPA, a third party certification organization, is another building block in Georgia-Pacific Professional’s commitment to customers who seek to highlight environmental stewardship in their offerings to consumers. The certification audit included a thorough inspection of the facilities that make these products, their operating procedures, pertinent documents and a review of the “chain of custody” for all fiber. In 2013, the CFPA added new criteria to its standards that measure water use and quality, renewable energy creation and individual environmental impact of facilities.
John Mulcahy, vice president – sustainability for Georgia-Pacific Professional, said, “I’m proud of the work we have done with our facilities and with CFPA to verify and recertify our existing products and manufacturing processes. Our manufacturing teams have done an excellent job in providing the data and analysis and supporting the on-site inspections need for this recertification.”
Archie Beaton, executive director of the CFPA, said, “We are pleased with Georgia-Pacific Professional’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and to their customers as shown through this recertification process.”
